Actually, lots of real-world information. Simple sentences. Easy to Read.

I've read several chapters of the book. Although it is true that it does not have color photos, the photos are easy to understand with the exception of the crossover cable / straight-thru cable. It is my understanding that the next edition will remedy this with a key which points out each type of wire color for the cables.
It is also true that there are several typos. I found out the author is aware and has contacted the publisher with a list of the errata. Again, the next edition should be cleaner. This is the first time, apparently, this author has written a book.
Despite those items - don't throw this book under the bus. The book is solid in terms of real-world information. The sentences are simple (and that helps students). It is obvious the author has a strong background in networking. After years of networking experience, I can tell you the following items made a lot more sense to me than other books have:
1) p. 12 - explanation of Physical versus Logical Topologies (some students have a hard time with this) - the explanation was easy - at least for me - to understand.
2) p. 28 - very decent explanation of the Data Link layer moving frames
3) p. 57 - great information about how cable is plenum-rated
4) p. 62 - explains the reason for "twists" in cable to alleviate outside interference
5) p. 89 - great explanation of what a "loopback" is
6) p. 95 - much better explanation of "unusable" (broadcast and network addresses within subnet than other books I have seen
7) p. 100 - the author thoroughly explains the symbols used in network topology - a lot of authors do NOT do that.
8) pp 99-105 - superb information on how physical and logical addressing work together. This is really important in the real-world to understand. A lot of networking books pay heed to the "theory" but don't explain coherently how a transmission gets to your computer --- from the standpoint of first logical addressing - then to the actual computer (physical). This section is well-illustrated.
9) pp. 108-109 - NAT (Network Address Translation) is explained and related to OUR home environments. Since most introductory network students will be most familiar with a HOME environment versus a large data center, this is good.
10) p. 128 - GREAT explanation of ARP (Address Resolution Protocol). By the way, one of the other comments was that the book had a lot of acronyms. In general, networking does have a lot of acronyms, but I noticed in this book that the phrase or definition related to the acronym was usually spelled out. Any networking book is going to contain acronyms. The key is - are they explained simply enough for students new to networking. For the most part, I found they were.
11) p. 138 - GREAT explanation of DNS (Domain Name Service/System). As most networkers know, this is a key protocol that introduction books need to explain well.
12) p. 176 - under "Basic Switch", great example/explanation of collision domains and how switches can reduce them
13) p. 226 - more robust explanation of Fast Ethernet technologies (100BASE-FX, etc) than other books I've seen.
14) p. 232 - Good explanation of REAL-WORLD concerns on Main Distribution Frame (MDF) and Intermediate Distribution Frame (IDF) placement. Instead of just throwing out the usual 100 meter distance as the standard for copper segments, the book explains why it is better to realize that cabling is NOT a straight-line process. You have to go around obstacles and turn corners. Anyone who has done cabling from computers to switches should be aware of this.
I can go on and on. The errata in the book does need to be worked - but the book is solid in its information.
The lab exercises do not require you to have a large network set up, but still help you with regards to certification.
The book is simpler to read than a lot of other books. Remember, this is an introductory book. The book definitely can be improved, and it is my understanding that it will be in the next edition.
But if you want to really understand the key concepts of networking from a real-world (not just theory) point of view, this is a good book.

Hope you like acronyms!

If you are lucky then your networking professor will choose an easier book to help you understand the fundamentals of networking. If not, well then you end up with this textbook. The book is so technically minded in it's writing, that it doesn't really introduce anything. I felt like I was supposed to have a base knowledge before I ever read it. A good textbook tries it's best to make the student learn the material, all this on is concerned with is having you memorize hundreds upon hundreds on acronyms so you can pass the Network+ certification exam. If that's your goal and you have a networking background, this is the book for you!
Also, for such an expensive book, none of the pictures are in color. While normally not an issue, they have illustrations of networking cables in 8 different shades of black, white and gray that look identical to the next example. And the book actually will say things like: "See the difference?".
Finally, the book is chock full of typos. In reading the first 4 lessons, I already notices at least half a dozen, sometimes you can tell what the author meant, sometimes its a blur. For such an expensive text, you would think they could release it with less errors. I guess the editor got tired of reading it too.
A review for this book is really irrelevant since you have no choice to but to buy it if your professor assigns it to your class, just know it's going to be a hard journey getting through it awake.

Hard to read on my 7 inche Kindle Fire HDX and other problems

This book is the text book for a class I am taking starting at the end of the month, so I thought I'd save about 50% off the print price & save the hassle of carrying around the book by getting the Kindle version: my mistake.
The book is probably fine, BUT there were several issues with the digital version that made it unworkable for me:
1. This is basically a PDF style ebook. The text doesn't flow normally like most ebooks: this basically is an image file of the book. In order to make the text legible on my 7 inch Kindle Fire HDX, I had to zoom in pretty far, but this meant I had to drag the page from side to side, up & down in order to read the entire page. This would probably work a lot better on the larger, 8.9 inch Kindle Fire HDX but, sadly, I don't have one of those.
2. I tried the browser-based Kindle reader: I got a message that this title isn't available in the browser-based reader.
3. So, I tried to read this thing in my Windows Kindle app: I got a message that this title isn't available for the Windows 8 app.
What the heck am I supposed to do? Get a Windows 7 PC? Buy a bigger Kindle? Neither is really an option, so I did the only other thing I could do: I returned it less than 8 hours after I bought it. I'll have to get the paperback version at twice the price.
So, the two stars is a review of this rather disappointing experience with the Kindle app's compatibility issues with this title. So, I learned my lesson: pay better attention to the description at the top of the page when it says "available for only these devices..."
