A VICTORIAN LESBIAN ROMANCE
Quicunque vult: A forward girl, ready to oblige every man that shall ask her.
(Grose's Dictionary of the Vulgar Tongue, 1811)
A feisty Irish prostitute with a murky past finds herself stuck in London's East End in the year of the Ripper.
Reeling from a series of bad choices and even worse luck, Mary Jane needs to quit her immoral life. She's approaching thirty years of age, which means her best days are coming to an end, and she's running out of time to better herself.
Ever cognizant of the narrowing window of opportunity before her, the openly sapphic and increasingly reluctant harlot sets her mind to escape from Whitechapel, her wishy-washy plans spurred on all the more when she meets Eva: an inexperienced young flower girl who falls keenly into her embrace and her bed.
Determined to shield the poorly educated and impecunious sixteen-year-old against the corrupting influence of men, and the desperate misery of poverty that drives so many naive slum girls to the streets, Mary Jane will do whatever it takes to preserve Eva's innocence, and to keep the wolf from baying at their door. Even if it kills her.
***Contains graphic & explicit language, including (non-erotic) M/F sex and sexual violence***

From the Author
I admit it: this book is rather large. Under normal circumstances, I've always felt that the more a streamlined a piece of work can be, the better. In this case, however, it was important to me to include as much detail as I possibly could because I felt I had a certain duty to the memory of Mary Jane Kelly. I wanted to give life to a woman who is only remembered for her death. To do that, I needed words. Lots of words.
The truth of the matter is that very little is known for certain about the woman called Mary Jane Kelly. Whether or not she was the woman found murdered and mutilated on Friday, November 9, 1888, in room number 13 at Miller's Court, is a topic of some debate, and having grown to love her very deeply over the last year, I'd rather like to think that she survived.

An amazing thriller, love story, and historical fiction
By Amazon Customer
This book is absolutely revitng. It's a long read, but every bit of it is highly interesting. If you are interested in the mystery of Jack the Ripper, you will thoroughly enjoy this book. It offers facts as well as interesting fictious explanations of unknown details found during the actually investigation. It's mainly a narative of how Mary Jane Kelly most likely lived, before, during and after the murders. It's a wonderful look into the working of a prostitue in 1880s London. Just be warned, though, that the author doesn't hold back in her explicit details of sexual relations between a woman (a prostitue) and a man (her customer) and two women. There are also scenes with unpleasant incest. I was glad of the fact that she didn't hold anything back. It made me feel as if could clearly see the happenings of the time and as a fanatic and student of history, I truley appreciated this. Also, the love and dedication seen between Mary Jane and Eva made the gruesome nature of living and working in Whitechapel at the time less atrocious. Even though it was a lengthy book, I had a very hard time putting it down.

Another winner from this author
By Roni
Since the main character was Mary Jane Kelly I was worrying from the beginning that I knew how this story would end. Everyone knows Mary Jane Kelly was killed by Jack The Ripper right but even knowing that it might end in tragedy I was still turning pages wanting to know what was going on. Spoiler alert..this book is about Mary Jane Kelly the prostitute not about Jack The Ripper. Jack The Ripper really didn't start being a part of this book until over 40% into the book. If you can't handle hetero sex don't read this book because Mary has male "johns." I have yet to read a book by this author that I did not completely enjoy. Well worth the money!!!

I should say that I enjoyed the first two Telford books I read
By Amazon Customer
First of all, I should say that I enjoyed the first two Telford books I read, which was Cadence of My Heart and Housemistress. I like her writing style and think Telford is a solid writer. That being said, this book felt like an above average first draft.
The story is told from the perspective of Mary Jane, a prostitute who falls in love with Eva, an innocent teenager not yet defiled by life in 19th century London. If you're going into this expecting a moving romance story, then I would suggest skipping this, as the main focus of the story isn't on the romance, but Mary Jane's life as a prostitute.
Before I get into what I didn't like, here is what worked for me. Mary Jane as a character was interesting, and although I wanted to punch her several times for the choices she makes, I can't deny that I found her captivating. Mary Jane and Eva moments reminded me why I like Telford as an author so much. It was interesting to read about contraception methods in 19th century London. Grammar Nazis will find nothing to complain about.
Now, for what I didn't quite like. As I said in the beginning, this story felt like an above average first draft. What I meant by that is I feel like 1/4 of the story could have been cut, and we wouldn't have missed out on anything. There a many information dump moments and flashback sequences that took me out of the story. There are scenes that could easily be summarized in a paragraph, yet Telford draws out for several pages and goes into detail. This was especially grating during some of the darker scenes, which while reading I kept thinking "Okay, I get it. This is a horrible thing that is being done. Can we move on with the story?" If there were only one or two such scenes, then it wouldn't have been much to complain about, but there so many overextended scenes like this that reading through this story started feeling like a chore.
Another thing I thought that could have been cut out was the excessive cum/semen imagery. Not that I'm opposed to it altogether, there are many stories where such exaggerated imagery fits with the tone, but I felt like all the cum/semen descriptions were cartoonish and didn't fit the gritty, realistic tone of the story. I don't need to be constantly told how a guy's splooge is oozing out of a girls pussy.
And despite the story follows a lesbian romance, this is not a lesbian romance book. I can't emphasize this enough. Mary Jane has sex with guys in just about every chapter. This fits with the book because Mary Jane is a prostitute, and this story is mainly about her life as a prostitute, but I felt like this needed to be pointed out to anyone expecting a this book to be a lesbian romance story.
I would only recognize this book to hardcore Telford fans and people who are interested in how life as a prostitute in 19th century was like. Overall, I think the depravity in this story was ill used and almost fetishized the sexual abuse a lot of the characters were put through. The romance between Mary Jane and Eva was cute, but it took a backseat to the the darker elements happening in the book.
