It s also empowering for you, as you learn how to understand your dog and help him learn to safely get along with people, dogs, and other triggers.

Why it is important to keep your dog calm in the presence of a trigger while teaching him to make good choices.
Step-by-step instructions needed to stage BAT set-ups to work with your dog in a controlled environment.
Practical ways to keep your dog from being pushed into a reactive state in and around your home and on walks.
How to use BAT preventively for puppy socialization.

Highly Recommended!
By Steward Robbins
I have been reading and studying books on reactivity and aggression for years, ever since I had a dog with this problem. I have to say that this is my favorite! There are other programs out there that will be successful, but I found that this author does the best job of organizing a program. She not only tells you what to do in various situations, but she explains WHY. This can only make us better trainers and more alert to our dog's reactions to things.

"Set Ups" are highly recommended as part of the BAT program, and I experienced first-hand how valuable these can be. I helped a friend work on her dog's fear reaction, and in recreating the event that scared him, and breaking it down into it's component parts, we discovered that the dog was not reacting to what the owner had thought. Knowing exactly what to work on certainly makes for more successful training! There are many other suggestions in the book for managing the life of a reactive or aggressive dog, both at home and away. There are discussions about various tool options, and stories of successful training with dogs having various issues. This book is worth it's weight in gold!!!!!

Great Technique That is Working Well for my Fear Reactive Dog!
By LeNore A. Ralston
My very sweet youngest Lab (who is now two and a half years old) suddenly became fear reactive at the end of last year. For a few months I worked on my own using another technique that helped her, but I wasn't getting the results I wanted. And I refuse to use other "corrective" techniques like prong or shock collars on any of my dogs. Last spring I began to work with a behaviorist who uses BAT and the technique has been very, very helpful for my girl. We use BAT in combination other techniques, primarily the counter-conditioning "Look At That" (LAT). However, BAT is especially helpful for my dog because she is particularly prone to being reactive to "surprises". In these situations, LAT doesn't work well, but BAT is perfect. Admittedly, at first it was very challenging to notice the sometimes subtle nuances in calming behavior so it was helpful to work with the behaviorist so one of us could watch her. However, after a while this became very second-nature to me and to my dog. And it has taught me to be much more attentive to my dog's behavior. She actually now knows the cue "BAT", so if I see her getting aroused and she hasn't made the choice to calm and redirect herself, I can cue her with "Where's your BAT?" and she will immediately offer sniffing, turning away, shaking it off, or yawning (her four favorites). She has made great progress and we will continue to work with BAT. It has really helped her to de-stress and focus, particularly in agility, where she can be surprised by dogs in high energy situations. I highly recommend BAT to anyone who is dealing with reactivity. It is a very frustrating, and sometimes heartbreaking, issue to deal with, but I found great relief through the use of this technique . . . and so has my dog!

Made reactive dog worse!
By Criticalthinker
No single training technique is appropriate for all dogs, and that is especially true with dogs exhibiting aggression, but I can say categorically that following Grisha Stewart's training protocol made my reactive dog MORE reactive rather than less. What was once a mild reactivity to dogs became, in my dog, a worrisome reactivity to strangers and all sudden movement over the course of several weeks. I am now faced with the task of undoing the harm.

I read this book in preparation for a BAT class series in which I was handling my own dog during set ups with other dogs. I viewed Grisha Stewart's DVD as well, and after completing my classes I read the book again. I approached all of this with an open mind, but I have cocluded that Stewart's training approach is wrong-headed.

BAT is a trademarked adaptation of operant conditioning techniques, with a general goal of replacing reactivity with incompatible, calming behaviors. Good in theory. In practice, though, Stewart's approach-and-retreat set ups are very like the way people bait dogs bred for fighting. With BAT you do your best to stay under threshold, of course, but how do you know where that threshold is? Realistically, it's by miscalculating and having your dog get over-aroused a few times. In the case of my smart, chase-crazy, shy-temperament herding dog, repeatedly approaching a dog across the field -- then retreating-- was boring and frustrating, and it fed the obsessiveness that is part of his breed makeup. The entire procedure became imbued with stress, and the same was true for the other dogs in the class. The instructor resorted, after a few classes, to the tried-and-true counter-conditioning technique of plugging the dogs with treats, or raining treats from the sky, when they saw a trigger. So much for BAT, which uses retreat from triggers as the primary reward because, as Stewart pioints out in her book, treats interfere with true learning. Ah.

One of BAT's biggest shortcomings is that it does not translate to the real world. Stewart even admits this in the book, suggesting that when handlers of reactive dogs are on walks they shower their dogs with food whenever they encounter triggers (simple counter conditioning), spray oncoming off-leash dogs with a citronella repellent (potentially dangerous), or just beat it the heck out of there (thanks loads). After a couple weeks of BAT-class set ups, my dog had a melt-down on a walk, in a place where he had walked before without incident. I had him on the harness Stewart recommends, too. You be the judge.

Taking all of this into account, along with Stewart's product recommendations -- many of which are inappropriate -- I cannot recommend this book or the technique. The one good takeaway I have from reading this and doing the classes is an increased awareness of my dog's arousal signals, as Stewart does provide some useful behavioral information. That's not enough to make up for the damage this did to my dog's training. Since the class concluded, I have been working with him using straight counter conditioning techniques (and a pheromone collar, which I highly recommend) and we have made great strides.
