About the Author
Douglas Brooks has a B.S./E.E. and an M.S./E.E. from Stanford University and a Ph.D. from the University of Washington. He has had forty years of experience in the electronics industry, ranging from circuit design engineer on the space program to president of his own manufacturing company. For the past twenty years he has been president of UltraCAD Design, Inc., a premier PCB Design Service Bureau in the Pacific Northwest.

Brooks has published hundreds of articles during his career. In the last twenty years, these articles have appeared in PCB Design Magazine, on Iconnect007’s websites, on Mentor Graphics’ web pages, and on UltraCAD’s web pages. In 2003, he published the book Signal Integrity Issues and Printed Circuit Board Design (Prentice Hall).

Brooks served on the faculty of San Diego State University for three years and was a visiting associate professor at the University of Washington for one year. He has given numerous seminars on Signal Integrity Issues in PCB Design over the past fifteen years all over the United States and in Moscow, Beijing and Shanghai, Taiwan, Japan, and Australia.

Brooks finally retired in 2012.

A good introduction to electronics for PCB designers and technicians

The Book Description is an accurate representation of this book. As a degreed and practicing engineer I found about 2/3rds of this book to be mostly rudimentary coverage of electronic components and circuit theory. That said, the author has an engaging and clear writing style and covers the material in detail. A technician or PCB designer with little formal electronics training should be able to learn a lot of key concepts from his presentation. The final third of the book will be of more use to engineers, particularly those who are less experienced in high-speed PCB design, as this is where the author gets into the details of crosstalk, ground bounce, reflections, via inductance and other practical high-speed PCB design issues. Like the rest of the book the writing is clear, concise and informative. I also have Bogatin's Signal and Power Integrity: Simplified book in the same series, and recommend that book if you need greater depth and more theory and the math that goes with it. Still, I found tidbits of information in here that I didn't know before, such as the recent experiments in trace current heating that caused the IPC to revise their trace current standard recently (and thereby proving a number of online calculators wrong.)

The author keeps his promise of keeping the math light and accessible, other than for three pages in the appendix where he briefly expounds on Maxwell's Equations, complete with their vectors and surface integrals. So don't panic if page 304 is the first page you turn to.

To be fair, this book isn't directed at engineers such as myself so I won't rate it as if it was. As I noted above the author is an excellent writer and does a great job of explaining electronics to a depth necessary for PCB design, and his material on high-speed PCB design is much more accessible than the more detailed but denser works such as those by Howard Johnson. I did take off one star because the author plugged his UltraCAD Design firm's software a little more than I like, particularly given the price of this book and the fact that being a Linux user I find his Visual Basic software to be of no use.
