From the Author
Excel is my favorite computer application of all time.
I'm delighted to contribute to the existing base of Microsoft Excel literature through my Excel University series. Excel is a big program, and Microsoft has done a great job of including numerous features and functions that are helpful to many different disciplines. The content of this course really focuses on the features and functions useful to accounting professionals. I've selected the features and functions that I've used during my CPA career and have focused on those items that have saved time.
I've held four positions during my career as a CPA: an auditor in public accounting, a financial analyst in industry, an accounting manager at a public company, and a consultant. In each of these roles, I learned a variety of Excel features, functions, approaches, and techniques that enabled me to get my tasks done more quickly. The most dramatic example occurred when I was an accounting manager; I was able to streamline our monthly close, reducing it from about two weeks to two days. I obtained this efficiency by delegating mechanical tasks to Excel. Blown away by the power of Excel, I decided to tell others about it. So, in 2000 I began to share what I had discovered.
It started with an article that I submitted to the Journal of Accountancy. It highlighted a simple Excel feature: hyperlinks. The article was eventually named "Financial Reports in a Snap" and was published in April 2000. Since then I've tried my best to show others how to save time by approaching their workbooks with proper design, technique, and the correct Excel features and functions. Fortunately, I am able to show accountants how to use Excel more effectively by providing training sessions to corporations and live CPE seminars to individual CPAs through the AICPA and the California CPA Education Foundation. While those sessions are successful, they do present constraints, namely time constraints. Typically a session is 8 hours, and that just isn't enough time to cover everything. So the Excel University series represents a comprehensive catalog of everything that I think is useful to accounting professionals. If you and I sat down together, and you asked me to tell you everything you need to know about Excel, this series of books would be my answer.
The goal of Excel University is to allow you to perform your job tasks in a fraction of the time they currently take. Excel has been my secret weapon for years, and I hope it can be yours as well.
From the Back Cover
The Excel University series explores the features, functions, and techniques generally useful to accountants in industry, public practice, consulting, or nonprofit organizations. A valuable guide and resource, it provides links to downloadable sample files and highlights the ability of Excel 2010 for Windows to maximize efficiency, automate recurring processes, and build reliable workbooks. It also includes practice files, exercises, screenshots, illustrations, and video content to demonstrate the practical application of the items presented in each chapter.
As an experienced auditor, financial analyst, accounting manager, and consultant, Jeff Lenning knows which features and functions are most relevant and helpful to accounting professionals. Offering a hands-on approach to learning this powerful application, he breathes life into the technical material he shares in his complete Excel University series with easy-to-follow narrative, inspirational stories, and passion. It's guaranteed you'll learn how to get your job done in a fraction of the time it takes you now.

Highly Recommended for all Excel Users
By Stephen M. Sheffield
Previously I had taken several Excel courses from Jeff Lenning through California Society of CPA's. Jeff's knowledge, presentation style, and recommendations were awesome, and as soon as I saw that he had published, I immediately purchased, and was not let down. Jeff has a great approach and I was able to immediately implement his techniques with Excel. But the greatest benefit I have received from Jeff's tutelage, is how he has changed the way I "think" when using Excel. Tips and tricks are great, but really it is the approach and methodology that makes all the difference. Buy the book, and take Jeff's classes if possible, if you want to improve your Excel abilities, you won't be sorry.

Accounting Student With No Excel Experience
By Juan G.
I started with an almost zero knowledge of Excel -to me it was just a bunch of columns and rows with numbers and letters that you could type stuff in. I do have decent PC skills (I feel comfortable with keyboard shortcuts and can navigate the Windows environment well). I am also an accounting student and so have a very solid knowledge of accounting terminology and concepts. From that starting point I began reading the book.
I worked through the book along with using the spreadsheets and videos provided on the author's website. With just that I feel I have a working knowledge of Excel and I am pretty confident I can put "Excel skills" on my resume. I am looking forward to working through the rest of the series. I also asked my accounting professor what he thought about dedicating time to study of Excel. He said it was a great investment in time for an accountant, "Like getting a new girlfriend" was his words.

A great tool for financial professionals who rely on Excel.
By Taylor W
As an Excel power-user and fan I though I had the application figured out......Excel University made me realize that I still have much to gain from Excel training.
While I did know many complex functions, shortcuts and tricks this book pointed out a ton of practical functions and tools I had somehow missed in all my years using the product. And while the lessons the book teaches would be valuable almost any user of Excel, they are specifically tailored to the Accountant/financial analyst so its all relevant. Furthermore the author's writing style and presentation method, combined with visual representations, make the concepts simple to read and grasp.
This is hands down the best Excel learning resource for accountants and financial/business analysts. We all take pride in our level of professional knowledge, but I'm so happy I put my Excel hubris aside and read this book.
