From the Author
This book represents a voyage of discovery. As a child, watching the joy/solace/comfort/pure pleasure people took in singing songs, I wanted to write the words and music that became "their song." I wanted to hear those songs sung in the clubs, on the street, in the car, and in grocery stores. I wanted people dancing, falling in love, falling out of love, skating, or doing dishes to them. In other words, I wanted "hits." Not just hits but big hits...hits that would last.

The Real Deal
By Acme Antiquarian
I have been writing songs as a professional for over forty years and I've read a lot of cerebral material on creativity and craft, most of which left no lasting impression. Ralph Murphy has come up with a different approach - a practical guide for commercial (i.e. moneymaking) songcraft. Mr. Murphy has analyzed countless successful songs to identify their common traits and has developed criteria to compare your own songwriting with that of an actual hit, while providing the reader with a template for success based on this data as well as his own experience.
Unlike many authors of this type of 'help book' the author is a bona-fide hit songwriter and music business insider - I believe therein lies the difference between this book and others. I don't always agree with everything he writes, but there is no denying the value of his approach - after all, you can't really call yourself a songwriter until you've had a hit! This book should help get you there.

Very good and simple written, but...
By Dagge
I have read several books and countless manuals abut songwriting, production, arrangement, recording etc. This book is very simple to understood and has alot of sound advices.
However, I was quite dissapointed to realize that there is not a single word said about how to write hit music, chords and/or melodies. Today top writers like RedOne emphasize importance of high quality melody, chords progression, production over lyrics because 'hits' are worldwide and majority of listeners are not native english speakers. So they can be mainly 'hooked' by a catchy melody etc.
Too bad, overall it is a good book but unfortunately one-sided. It still remains a mistery how to write a hit melody. If it were easier to acomplish, much more writers would be rich :)
thanks for reading

The Big Picture
By Paul R. Reece
I bought this book after watching a video of Ralph Murphy teaching a class at a university in New Orleans. I was hoping it was written as well as the presentation he gave. It was! The book gives the Big Picture as well as the details of Songwriting. I enjoyed every page.
The advice will improve my songwriting abilities as I apply them. As mentioned in the book, I need to re-tool first.I've been writing songs for 35+ years and have some bad habits. I've read many books on songwriting and I must truthfully say to buy this one first before you buy any others. There are many wonderful songwriting books by Jason Blume, Pat & Pete Luboff, and John Braheny. But buy this one first.
