Just what I need to revitalize my teaching!

I always knew that there was more to teaching and learning than "fill-in-the-blanks" and parroting back what I say on the tests, but I didn't know how to purposefully make the change to a more effective way of teaching. This book, Teaching Students to Dig Deeper, gives me the tools I need. I have to say that after reading this book, my whole philosophy of teaching and learning has transformed. I realize that by avoiding the collaborative projects and investigations because of lack of time and "testing" pressure, I was depriving the students of some of the most powerful learning tools. I get it now-- students learn better when they have to "think" deeply about something.
The book is based on ten active learning traits that students will need to be fully prepared for college or a career such as helping our students learn to think, communicate and solve problems. Each chapter explains why the skill is so important and demonstrates clearly what a teacher can do to promote these skills. I like the practical examples of just how to accomplish in my classroom what the book teaches. I also like how the book clarifies strategies as the "why "of teaching a concept or skill and "techniques" as the "how" of teaching the concepts. Another thing I noticed is that all of the learning techniques are designed to engage the maximum number of students. Even the simple act of asking questions focused on getting all the students to participate.
Ben has a uniquely informal way of presenting information that makes reading his book more like a conversation with mentor than some sort of expert expository on pedagogy. Teaching Students to Dig Deeper is so engaging that once I started reading, I couldn't put it down. I have been teaching for over 25 years, and Mr. Johnson has helped me to dig deeper as a teacher! The book is well documented with a robust bibliography, but it is also full of wonderfully refreshing experiences from Mr. Johnson's personal and professional life that illustrate clearly the desired message: teach students to think and then learning will happen!
Mr. Johnson, thank you for your great ideas and encouragement! My classroom will be a place of deep learning and not just superficial standardized test preparation. I can't wait to use the techniques I have found in your book next year!

amazing

Amazing. Another book with five star ratings that promises that we (as educators)will be able to revolutionize our teaching. So now all school districts rush out and buy copies for the book studies to begin.
If you were looking for a book with examples you could use in class - this is not that book. This is a book that tells us why students need to be "flexible learners, inquisitive learners, and willing to receive feedback." NO... too...much...new...information... (sorry for the tongue-in-cheek tone)

Be curious through out your life

Every home library should have this book, and it should be underlined, dog eared, and well used. Whether we like it or not we are all teachers, either with our own children, grandchildren, coach, or at work. The principles the author voices, hit at the heart of how we all really learn, and what can be done to keep alive the curiosity that is with us from birth. I have read that we do more learning in the first two of three years of life than we do in all the rest. That is pathetic. As an 80 or so year old grandfather, I would venture that I have learned more in the last several years than I did when I attended college. This is because I am yet learning, from the salesman that sold me a set of tires for my Ford and instructed me on how to determine the best wearing tire from the codes printed on the tires I purchased or to understanding what Dark Matter is from a magazine. The teacher should instill in the student a desire to be more curious than what you were as a three year old.
