The Origins of Nazi Violence, by Enzo Traverso

In the half-century since the appearance of Hannah Arendt's seminal work The Origins of Totalitarianism, innumerable historians have detailed the history of the Nazi years. Now, in a brilliant synthesis of this work, Enzo Traverso situates the extermination camps as the final, terrible moment in European modernity's industrialization of killing and dehumanization of death. Traverso upends the conventional presentation of the Holocaust as an inexplicable anomaly, navigating an excess of antecedents both technical and cultural. Deftly tracing a complex lineage - the guillotine and machine gun, the prison and assembly line, as well as widespread ideologies of racial supremacy and colonial expansion - Traverso reveals that the ideas that coalesced at Auschwitz came from Europe's mainstream and not its margins.

From Publishers Weekly
Traverso, a political scientist who teaches in France, offers a clear thesis in this longish essay: Nazism was not an aberration or a throwback to the barbarities of an earlier age. Instead, it was very much a modern phenomenon rooted in the major trends of European history since the 18th century. The "rationalization" of killing that the Nazis perfected began with the guillotine of the French Revolution. Nazi racism had its origins in European imperialism and scientific advances, including Darwin's theory of evolution. The Nazis' total war drew on the model of WWI. The problem with Traverso's discussion is that he adds very little to ideas put forward by major social theorists like Hannah Arendt, Max Horkheimer, Theodor Adorno and Zygmunt Bauman. Moreover, he writes with broad generalizations that, in many instances, would barely survive historical scrutiny. The Nazis indeed developed an industrial-style killing operation. But fully 40% of European Jews were killed in face-to-face shootings or from the effects of malnutrition and disease in the ghettos. Traverso likes to invoke Frederick Taylor, the American apostle of time-management studies, to show that the Nazis implemented a capitalist-style system. But Taylor sought economic efficiency, which the Nazis never came close to accomplishing. And the primacy they gave to racial killings directly undermined the process of production. There is food for thought in this volume, but some of the theories do need to be tested against the historical reality of the Third Reich.

Review
"An important contribution to the debate on the origins of the Nazi crimes against humanity." —Etudes (Paris)

"[Enzo Traverso] offers us an absolutely original perspective. . . . [He] isolates, with rare force, the mortifying core of Nazi anti-Semitism." —Lire

"Returns ideas to their proper place, at a time when we must reconstruct the fundamental lines of a new project of liberation. . . . Particularly timely. " —Rouge

subtle and brilliant
By A Customer
A brilliant, subtle, thought-provoking study studded with insights on every page which, thanks to the author's intimate acquaintance with the existing literature on Nazism, achieves a density and refinement worthy of the very best history books. Traverso is equally good whether citing antecedents he admires (especially Arendt), laying into those he does not (he shreds Goldhagen's already dubious reputation), or laying out his powerful but clearly still unpalatable arguments about Nazism as a crazed extension of European political trends -- colonialism, eugenics, revolutionary nationalism, industrialisation -- not an aberration contradicting them. Highly recommended.

The Holocaust riddle
By John C. Landon
The short commentary on this book notes, "A leading social scientist's depiction of the Holocaust as the culmination of liberal, European modernization." That's a little misleading and this very interesting analysis of the Holocaust is not as such a postmodern indictment of modernity, but an attempt to see some of the precursors of the tragedy in the deviations from true modernity such as imperialism, colonialism, instrumental rationality, etc... In all the theoretical endeavors here, amid the demands for honesty on this question, few authors dare even mention the place of Darwinism (yes, Darwinism, and not just Social Darwinism)in the picture, yet the echoes are direct once some of the real statements of Darwin and Wallace on extermination, imperialism, primitive peoples are brought out of mothballs (easier to do in France). These and many other useful insights make for a very cogent book, whether or not this is the final or best approach.

astute, insightful critique of authoritarian culture
By steppxxxxz
Simply one of the best works of critical thinking in the last thirty years. A far more probing analysis than a lot of other more highly visible works of Philosophy/history/social theory. A relevant book for the US today.

The Birth of the English Common Law
By Gerard Paul Craddock
The Birth of the English Common Law, 2nd ed. Cambridge University Press 1973, 1988, R.C. van Caenegem

In The Birth of the English Common Law (2nd ed) van Caenegem by a thorough analysis of primary sources produces a coherent and fascinating exposition of the birth of the common law. The author explores centuries old controversies; did the common law arrive with the Conqueror in 1066 or was there a nascent common law in operation in pre-conquest England? Did the jury pre-date the conquest? The work is replete with fascinating insights concerning medieval society of general interest. The notion that the ordeal (trial by water or fire), and battle were surpassed as modes of proof because the royal courts were able to offer jury verdicts that were considered more reliable is just one example. Promotion of the jury in the royal courts of the Norman rulers accompanied the development of a centralized judiciary. The common law did not so much arrive with William, but flourished in Norman courts because it surpassed existing methods and found acceptance by the English. The loss of the continental Crown possessions saw the common law thrive in England alone. Van Caenegem, in a measured way, paying due attention to those of a different mind, makes a fascinating case that England did not make the common law. Rather, the common law made England.

In the midst of WWII in Britain, spouses at war and stretched budgets left housewives to “make do” with what they had. Make Do and Mend was first published as a pamphlet in 1943, as a cheerful reminder of the techniques for household solutions provided by wartime government. Now, republished in the twenty-first century, these tips can be used to spruce up your household and wardrobe on a dime. The book includes old-fashioned remedies for everything from washing silks to repelling the “moth menace,” as well as patterns and directions on how to patch holes in clothing with stylish fabric, and how to take scraps of wool to create new looks. The book also includes “grand ways to eke out dated or worn cloths” and provides ways of “re-making old garments which you have never considered.” References throughout to the scarcity of materials speaks to how valuable these tips and tricks were in wartime Britain. For example, in a section devoted to the corset, readers are reminded that “now that rubber is so scarce your corset is one of your most precious possessions.”
From the “too-tight blouse” to the “cure for bagginess,” Make Do and Mend is filled with the charm and wit of the 1940s and provides the time-tested, fail-safe solutions from generations past that will be a delight to nostalgia seekers and homemakers of today.

English Parish Churches (World of Art), by Edwin Smith, Graham Hutton

The late Sir John Betjeman described this volume as "a gem of a book...condensed knowledge without being stodgy, affectionate without being mawkish." From the Saxon simplicity of the little church of St. Lawrence at Bradford-on-Avon to the late Victorian splendor of Holy Trinity, Sloane Street, London, Edwin Smith's photographs of parish churches epitomize English history and the English way of life. Graham Hutton's enthusiastic texts set the buildings in their social and historical context, while Olive Cook, Edwin Smith's window, provides illuminating notes to the pictures. 214 Illus.

The classic guide
By Andrew S. Rogers
It seems hard to overstate the importance of the work of photographer Edwin Smith to the preservation and cataloguing of English ecclesiastical architecture. This book, first published in 1952 and substantially updated and enlarged after Smith's death in 1971, is, if not the definitive guide to the subject, probably one of the most important.
Smith's photography is enhanced by informative chapters, written by Graham Hutton, that trace the evolution of English parish church design and construction from well before the Conquest up to and through the Victorian era. Of course, the story of parish churches is also the story of the parish, and therefore the reader also will find here a fine capsule summary of changing sociological patterns over many centuries.
If I have one complaint, it's in the way the text, explanatory notes, and photos are arranged. Hutton's chapters are annotated with references to the photographic plates, which are all generally in one section following the relevant text. The explanatory notes on the photos, in turn, are in a section following the plates. So a reader who wants to look at a photo to which Hutton refers must turn ahead several pages to find the photo, and then several more pages to read, essentially, the caption to the photo. In all, it makes for a lot of flipping pages back and forth and a less than entirely efficient reading experience.
Apart from that, though, this title should have a lot of appeal, not just to architecture and art historians, but also to the not-insubstantial number of people who have affection for historic churches, the English countryside, and the preservation of both. There is much here to learn from, and enjoy.

A Good Process
By Alfred L. Hathcock
This is a good introduction to parish church architecture. The format presented in the book does require quite a bit of page turning but the format does produce an effective learning process.
As I read the text I turned to the photos and studied them as they were referenced in the text. At the conclusion of the text there are notes on the photos and then the photos follow. This format occurs throughout the book. After reading the text I then read the photo notes and studied the photos for a second time. This format and study method links the visual study of the photos with the textual study causing each to develop the other. As a result, the second photo exam reveals far more to the reader than the first.
This book has been very beneficial to me and I recommend it and the study method it creates.

The beauty of light.
By Gerald Allen
Hey folks. To whatever else good you can say about this book needs to be added that Smith was a card-carrying great photographer. Look at the ways he understands the effects of natural light on his subjects.

Fortunately, his prints and negatives are now cared for in the RIBA library in London.

Kurt Vonnegut: Letters, by Kurt Vonnegut

NAMED ONE OF THE BEST BOOKS OF THE YEAR BY
Newsweek/The Daily Beast • The Huffington Post • Kansas City Star • Time Out New York • Kirkus Reviews

This extraordinary collection of personal correspondence has all the hallmarks of Kurt Vonnegut’s fiction. Written over a sixty-year period, these letters, the vast majority of them never before published, are funny, moving, and full of the same uncanny wisdom that has endeared his work to readers worldwide.

Included in this comprehensive volume: the letter a twenty-two-year-old Vonnegut wrote home immediately upon being freed from a German POW camp, recounting the ghastly firebombing of Dresden that would be the subject of his masterpiece Slaughterhouse-Five; wry dispatches from Vonnegut’s years as a struggling writer slowly finding an audience and then dealing with sudden international fame in middle age; righteously angry letters of protest to local school boards that tried to ban his work; intimate remembrances penned to high school classmates, fellow veterans, friends, and family; and letters of commiseration and encouragement to such contemporaries as Gail Godwin, Günter Grass, and Bernard Malamud.

Vonnegut’s unmediated observations on science, art, and commerce prove to be just as inventive as any found in his novels—from a crackpot scheme for manufacturing “atomic” bow ties to a tongue-in-cheek proposal that publishers be allowed to trade authors like baseball players. (“Knopf, for example, might give John Updike’s contract to Simon and Schuster, and receive Joan Didion’s contract in return.”) Taken together, these letters add considerable depth to our understanding of this one-of-a-kind literary icon, in both his public and private lives. Each letter brims with the mordant humor and openhearted humanism upon which he built his legend. And virtually every page contains a quotable nugget that will make its way into the permanent Vonnegut lexicon.

• On a job he had as a young man: “Hell is running an elevator throughout eternity in a building with only six floors.”
• To a relative who calls him a “great literary figure”: “I am an American fad—of a slightly higher order than the hula hoop.”
• To his daughter Nanny: “Most letters from a parent contain a parent’s own lost dreams disguised as good advice.”
• To Norman Mailer: “I am cuter than you are.”

Sometimes biting and ironical, sometimes achingly sweet, and always alive with the unique point of view that made him the true cultural heir to Mark Twain, these letters comprise the autobiography Kurt Vonnegut never wrote.

From Booklist
Even with the abundance of novels, stories, and essays Vonnegut completed during his lifetime, it will surprise few admirers that he was an equally prolific letter writer. Compiled for the first time, by his close friend and fellow author Wakefield, Vonnegut’s correspondence spans 60 years, from a 1945 letter he wrote to his parents upon being released from a German POW camp to a final declining, at 84, shortly before his death, of an invitation to deliver a lecture at Cornell, his alma mater. In between, bearing all the canny observations and sardonic witticisms that distinguished his most famous works, are dozens of letters to relatives, friends, and sometimes foes, many revealing fascinating insights into Vonnegut’s private thoughts and inspirations. Highlights include reflective letters on his sudden rise to fame, supportive notes to such colleagues as Bernard Malamud and Norman Mailer, and a scathing missive to a school board threatening censorship. Arranged in chronological order and including Wakefield’s insightful background information on Vonnegut’s life, this is a volume fans will treasure. --Carl Hays

“Letters’ greatest gift is the gift of all such anthologies: It humanizes an icon. . . . The fallibility and kindness of the real person shine through clearer in his more personal writing, separating the author from the oeuvre in a way that makes both richer.”—The A.V. Club

“There are authors we admire or envy, but there are just a few we really, really love, and Vonnegut is one of them.”—The Washington Post

“These letters display all the hallmarks of Vonnegut’s fiction—smart, hilarious and heartbreaking.”—The New York Times Book Review

“Smart, funny, and very compassionate. Reading this is a must for fans of the author.”—The Christian Science Monitor

“Old correspondence from even famous writers can be a bore, but not Vonnegut’s. He was always at his best when adopting an intimate, down-to-earth tone, and the same animating force that made him a brilliant storyteller is evident again and again in these letters. . . . This is a frank and funny book, offering rich insights into Vonnegut’s character and career.”—The Dallas Morning News

“This miraculous volume of selected letters provides a moving and revelatory portrait of the famed author of Slaughterhouse-Five and Cat’s Cradle. . . . Fans will find the collection as spellbinding as Vonnegut’s best novels, and casual readers will discover letters as splendid in their own way as those of Keats.”—Publishers Weekly (starred review)

“A literary treasure . . . this collection of letters—many of which have never been published—rightly can be viewed as the autobiography Vonnegut never wrote.”—The Oklahoman

“[An] intimate, far-ranging monologue by one of the 20th century’s funniest, sharpest, darkest minds . . .  it’s difficult not to marvel at Vonnegut’s depth, warmth and wit. . . . Together, [the letters] give a comprehensive sketch of his personality. They show who he was and who he became.”—The Kansas City Star

“[Reveals] Vonnegut’s passions, annoyances, loves, losses, mind and heart . . . The letters stand alone—and stand tall, indeed. . . . Vonnegut’s most human of hearts beats on every page.”—Kirkus Reviews (starred review)

“Letters mirrors some of Vonnegut’s best fiction . . .  wry, witty, and eminently quotable. Perhaps more importantly, his letters reflect a genuineness and humanity that always lived just beneath the surface of Vonnegut’s fiction.”—The Financialist

“Wit, aphorism, charm, wisdom and joshery abound here. . . . Vonnegut’s voice was as unique as his art. It is ominpresent here.”—Buffalo News

“Everything that’s familiar in [Vonnegut's] fiction is in the letters—he’s funny, caustic, sentimental, profound, melancholy, angry, and always himself.”—The Oregonian

“Tirelessly compiling letters and manuscripts from over seven decades of correspondence with his mentors, publishers, and even a school board director who banned his works, Wakefield finally gives the reader a sense of Vonnegut’s life without time travel or aliens to mystify and universalize his emotions. . . . Vonnegut is stripped of any possible self-promotion and his true affection and unselfishness shows. . . . a deep and true portrayal.”—The Daily Californian

“At last: the Vonnegut book readers of the late modern master have been waiting for. . . . It’s his voice again, live as ever, clear and unvarnished, with the pop and crackle of a hardwood fire on an Autumn night. . . . For those of us that miss Kurt Vonnegut, it makes this collection a gift. Pick up this book, it’s like having him by your side.”—NUVO

You'll Love These Letters!
By Lena Rivkin
It's rare that a book's introduction makes me speak out loud while reading. Don't get me wrong. I wasn't reading aloud. I just found myself saying "Wow" and "Huh!" and "I didn't know that!" out loud, to myself, as I read this beautiful book. As an artist, I found the cover photo and art and even the fonts of the chapter headings both stunning and a fond visit back to the Seventies. But as a reader, and a passionate re-reader of writers I love, I was intrigued and fascinated by the introduction- written with passionate restraint by Dan Wakefield.

Honestly? I rarely read more than one page of book introductions, as they usually reveal more about the writer of the Introduction than the person the Introducer is introducing. But this is happily not the case with Dan Wakefield. I love Wakefield's books, especially "Expect A Miracle" and "Spiritually Incorrect." Actually, now that I think about it, I probably only began to read this Introduction because it was written by Dan Wakefield! His clear, concise and empathetic prose informed me deeply about Kurt Vonnegut and his influences, his family and his artistic struggles to have his iconic and iconoclastic voice published and read.

In fact, a unique and welcome addition to this book is the introduction of each era of letters- which smartly and helpfully places us in the context of Vonnegut's life when he wrote the letters and to whom he was writing. It's such a simple technique but begs the question of why this isn't done more with published letters of notable people... and in this book the chapter introductions serve to create more comprehension of Vonnegut's life and how he dealt with family, friends, associates, success and disappointment. Not only did I feel I was learning so much more about Vonnegut, in almost a biographical way, but this book served to make me want to hunt down a biography of Vonnegut-- but only if it's as well written as this one.

The mark of a good book is one that inspires me to read more. Kurt Vonnegut's Letters not only makes me want to read more Vonnegut but it also makes me want to go back and re-read my treasured Dan Wakefield books.

Great winter read. Stay inside, get cozy on a couch under a blanket and disappear into the mind of a great man as commemorated by another great man.

KV Rocks From the Grave
By Ogr8ys1
Perhaps I am wearing rose colored glasses when I read this, with KV being my favorite author, but this book will show you how the man thought throughout the decades in a way that no biographer can ever capture. His letters flourish with wit, humor, insecurity, grandiose notions, and indignation. He outlines his struggles to become a literary giant, while not understanding how he achieved this title.

You actually can picture him at the typewriter and share in the "mood of the moment" of his thoughts, written to a wide variety of people through the 60 years that this testaments span.

As a true fan of his literature, you won't be sorry for this purchase as you revisit books long past, and my guess is that after reading this you will be dusting off Breakfast of Champions and Cat's Cradle to fully understand what you have just enjoyed reading.

Finally you will receive a sense of American history and where the world was, is and is perhaps heading towards. Just loved it and snorted this book up like a cocaine addict.

5 stars.

Vonnegut still a good read
By Rose Norman
Have been a Vonnegut fan since *Slaughterhouse 5* and have read most of his fiction, and some of the non-fiction (*Timequake*). These letters are a cut above most of what he was publishing in those last 20 years, and they explain what was going on that made those later books so disappointing, to me anyway. The letters are especially well edited by a friend from his hometown, Indianapolis. Not a "getting even" book. More a "getting inside" the life of one of the most authentic writers of our time.

The Mysterious Reign of King Tutankhamen

Upon the opening of the famous tomb of King Tutankhamen, Carter and his team found a huge array of sumptuous grave goods. However, they also found a very small tomb, lacking the well-known royal depictions and wide array of different paintings and inscriptions. Even the grave goods, while luxurious, did not seem fit for a king for his journey to the afterlife.

Much evidence indicates that the tomb was not actually originally intended for the young king. The size of the tomb, the lack of details, and even the sarcophagus itself have led to the theory that this tomb was hastily re-purposed for the boy-king. There is evidence that much of his tomb, including the coffins that he was buried in, had actually been intended for someone else and quickly retooled for use in Tut's burial.

The many mysteries surrounding Tut led to many fantastic rumors, including that of a curse on the tomb of the boy-king. Circumstances and seemingly sudden deaths, fueled by media coverage, helped ignite the rumor that there was a curse on the tomb and that those who worked within it or benefited from the goods within it would suffer a grisly fate. There were just enough bizarre coincidences to fuel the rumors and convince many of the existence of a curse on the tomb of King Tut.

Great author and biographies
By Jean Forde
T.D. van Basten has written great biographies so far about the old Egyptian Queens and Pharaohs, this is his third book in the ancient Egypt series together with Cleopatra and Nefertiti. When I got notice that his latest book about Tutankhamen was available, I was gladly willing to give this book a few hours of my time. None of his books so far are boring history facts, at least for me, he has managed to find the right balance to keep the reader interested with enough space for a little bit of imagination which makes you think about how life used to be in ancient Egypt. His books are all a complete journey from the beginning to the end, with additional prehistory and modern history. Hoping to see more biographies being covered in the near future!

This book explains the WHY’s
By Adrienne Meehan
The old Egypt is something that I don’t know much about yet, but I’m really eager to learn more about all the famous Pharaohs. I’m very glad to have discovered this great educational book about King Tutankhamen, which was very interesting! I’ll make sure to give the other 2 books of this author a try as well. This book doesn’t just throw you right into the deep, you’ll learn more about the family and prehistory, which is absolutely great! You’re not only learning when and how Tutankhamen became king of an Egypt in downfall, but also WHY. This is always very important to me, and I think the author has done a great job on that! The book literally explains everything about the young king, his family and the country with its citizens.

Everything is covered
By Viola Sutliff
In this book the world of King Tutankhamen is presented to you. You’ll find all the discoveries and evidence regarding Tutankhamen’s life till the very latest findings and speculations. I already knew quite a few things about Tut, but after reading this book I now also understand why some things were done differently. This book also covers the situation of Egypt before Tutankhamen became king. This is a complete story, including the discovery of his tomb years and years later in 1922. If you like biographies, Egypt and the mysteries of ancient times then you should definitely give this book a try.
