Skip this one.
By Sandra L. Powers
I have read all the Black Dog books to this point (1-4, including the 1.5 short story) and I enjoyed the series quite a bit. But despite that, I would recommend that you skip this novella. Anything you might need to know for later books can be summed up in a single sentence (and I suspect it will be anyway, since an author generally can't rely on readers to read all the interstitial novellas and shorts).

Why do I suggest you skip it? Because truthfully, this novella just isn't up to the author's usual standards. The writing is fine, per se - clear descriptions, interesting dialog, lively action, good smooth flow. Hailey Edwards has a solid grasp of the mechanics of her profession. Unfortunately, the plot and characters are a severe disappointment.

This is a short, sweet, simple romance - and there is nothing wrong with short, sweet, simple romances! But a romance of this kind lives and dies by its characters. The author tried to shoehorn the existing character of Mai into her planned story framework, but Mai didn't want to go. Mai's behavior and attitudes change by the scene as the character we know from the previous books fights with the plot constraints the author has laid out for this one. And the new characters - the love interest, the childhood friend, even the controlling father and submissive mother - are mere bland sketches with scarcely little more depth than the labels I have presented here. Without solid characterization, the story limps along on illogical and inconsistently applied romance tropes.

This could have been a sweet little love story. With a bit more length it could have been a fascinating look at what it means to have fated mates on the border between tradition and self-actualization. But it was neither of these things. Instead, it was just a hot mess.

(And I'm not even going to talk about the con scenes. Bah!)

A great addition and side series to the Black Dog books!
By Gizzimomo Wilson
As a fan of the Black Dog series of which this series is a spin off I can easily say that this is a fun little book and the beginning of what has the potential to be a interesting new chapter in the world of the fae. Of course if you haven't read Hailey Edwards Black Dog series you may be in for a little confusion when it comes to reading this book as a lot of the characters from that series appear in this book as side characters (Thierry Thackerey, the Black Dog's daughter, being one of them seeing as she is best friends and housemates with Mai) and of course Mai herself, this books lead character, was herself a side character in that series, and incidently she was one of my favourite characters in that series too.

So Mai gets her own story here and the chance to be centre stage and while I did really enjoy reading this novella I did find that Mai herself lost some of the wonderful shine, sparkle and sheer gutsiness that made her so special before. It made me more than a little sad as she didn't seem complete somehow for me, saying that the overall story did make up for it in some ways. What we have is the fae mythology being used perfectly here and tells in a roundabout way of how kitsune, the fox spirit fae that Mai and her family, find their mates, of how the females are in charge of it and how they test and choose their mates. BUT while that is the real crux of the story it's more complicated than that when Mai finds herself kidnapped by a man, another kitsune, kidnaps her at a comic convention and claims that he knew her before, something that Mai has no memory of despite remembering his brother and considering him a friend. Ryuu, Mai's kidnapper, had plans for Mai as he wants her as his mate but does he really want Mai or is about revenge against Mai's father who ruined his family and exiled them from the kitsune clan? The answer is a complicated and intense affair of which I'm not going to mention for fear of spoiling the book for others.

I will say that this book is fun in itself and it gave me the chance to learn much more about Mai, her family and the kitsune culture in general and that is something I wanted to learn more about right the way through the Black Dog books. Edwards is very good at crafting great characters, full of spunk that are intriguing and that you need to learn all you can about. With the Black Dog books adding to the mythology and backstory you really get a great sense of the fae world in which Mai lives, about how the varying fae cultures work within themselves and as a whole and this is the aspect of Edwards work that I love the most as her fae world is so interesting to me and I want to learn so much about it meaning that I will be looking forward eagerly to any future instalments of Mai's story and anything else centred on this fae world that she may produce in the future. It's great work and I personally LOVE it!

Would I recommend it to others, well yes I would but I would say that reading the Black Dog books beforehand is definitely beneficial and will give you a better base and understanding before going into this book. It is a great read and is a great addition to the stories of this fae world.

Fun spinoff to a solid NA urban fantasy series
By Liana Smith Bautista | Will Read for Feels
*** I received this book for free from Netgalley in exchange for an honest review. This does not affect my opinion of the book or the content of my review, which was originally published on book blog Will Read for Feels.

When I buy into a series, I really do buy into it, as evidenced by the fact that after enjoying the first book in Hailey Edwards’ Black Dog urban fantasy series, Dog with a Bone, I went on to read books 2, 3, and 4 over a span of just a couple of days. More on the series at a future date, but suffice it to say that the story gets more and more complex with each installation in the series. But the one fun, bright spot that remains constant no matter what kind of nasty stuff is flying in badass half-fae Conclave marshal Thierry Thackeray’s life is her BFF, Mai Hayashi.

Mai is a kitsune, and like the rest of the females of this type of fae, she devotes quite a bit of her time testing the males she meets to try to find the one fated to be her mate. But she doesn’t dedicate all her time to mate-hunting; she’s an avid cosplayer, and at the beginning of this novel, she’s actually managed to rope a reluctant Thierry into donning a costume and partnering up with her at a convention.

At the con, Mai bumps into an old friend, who just happens to be accompanied by a hot Mr. Mysterious dressed as Dean Winchester from Supernatural. “Dean” finds a way to get under her skin with just the heat of his stare. But it’s been a long time since she’s seen her friend, and he and Dean shock (and outrage) the stuffing out of her when they drug Thierry and kidnap Mai. Though she threatens them with the considerable wrath of her badass bestie as well as that of her powerful and doting father, what she learns of their motives rocks her sheltered, fun-loving world to its very foundations.

Althought there is an element of mystery in this novella, it’s not the whodunnit type; it’s pretty clear what happened, at least as far as the kitsune who kidnap Mai are concerned. More, it’s a question of what they know of what went wrong is accurate and, more importantly, why things happened the way they did. What’s notable about how Edwards handled this is that she really allowed Mai’s character to shine through in the way she handles learning that her world isn’t as straightforward as she thought it, and the blame could well lie with the father who has always indulged her, even above her sisters.

Mai’s determination to get to the bottom of the problem she’s presented with as well as to learn both sides of the story really shed light on some of the depths in her character, which was only hinted at in the other books in this series. More, the way she takes her stand shows that not only does she have a mind of her own, a strong sense of justice, and the ability to hold firm when push comes to shove, but she also possesses a political savvy that makes her an asset to those she chooses to back.

On the mushier side of things, since this is still an urban fantasy romance, of course I need to talk about two very important aspects of this novella: Ryuu, the hot-to-foxtrot kitsune with a cause, and the way in which the love story unfolds.

First off, I have to mention that Ryuu is just adorbz! There are just so many ways he’ll appeal to readers looking for a hero to swoon over. Thanks to the responsibility thrust upon his shoulders, he’s alpha in all the ways that count; he’s very conscious of the burden that comes with leadership, and he knows that while it means he gets to make decisions for his people, it also means that when those choices are hard, he can’t pass the buck to anyone else. And in Ryuu’s case, those choices are matters of life or death. Despite the weight he carries, which is only added to by the tragic events that have shaped the boy he was into the determined man he is now, he still has many moments of oh-so-cute geekiness, and his innate sweetness will make marshmallows of the ventricles of your heart.

As for Ryuu and Mai’s relationship, it starts out with a lot of push and pull and, of course, bickering. Through it is an abiding respect for one another that shines through even when they are at each other’s throats. And in the end, they both find a way to balance their responsibilities–to themselves and to their families—and their desire to be together. Theirs is a rocky road to love, but it’s a journey I enjoyed taking alongside them, especially as, despite the whole issue of fated mates, it was very clear that they both made a choice to be together and, more than that, to be partners in the truest sense of the word.

Can this be read as a standalone novel? Actually, yes. Although Black Dog fans will better appreciate the dynamics of Thierry and Mai’s friendship, not to mention some of Thierry’s kiss-and-tell moments about her so-yummy incubus mate, it’s not necessary to have read the Black Dog books to appreciate this one. I’d still highly recommend it, though! And I can’t wait for the new spinoff series, Gemini, set for release in January!

The Modern Urban Landscape: 1880 to the Present, by Professor E. C. Relph

Why do the cities of the late twentieth century look as they do? What values do their appearance express and enfold? Their sheer scale and the durability of their materials assure that our cities will inform future generations about our era, in the same way that gothic cathedrals and medieval squares tell us something of the Middle Ages. In the meantime, our urban landscapes can tell us much about ourselves.

For E. C. Relph, the urban landscape must be envisioned as a total environment―not just streets and buildings but billboards and parking meters as well. The Modern Urban Landscape traces the developments since 1880 in architecture, technology, planning, and society that have formed the visual context of daily life. Each of these shaping influences is often viewed in isolation, but Relph surveys the ways in which they have operated independently to create what we see when we walk down a street, shop in a mall, or stare through a windshield on an expressway.

Two sets of ideas and fashions, Relph argues, have had an especially important impact on urban landscapes in the twentieth century. An "internationalism" made possible by new building technologies and more rapid communications has replaced regional style and custom as the dominant feature of city appearance, while a firm belief in the merits of self-consciousness has imposed logical analysis and technical manipulation on such commonplace objects as curbstones and park benches. "As a result," writes Relph, "the modern urban landscape is both rationalized and artificial, which is another way of saying that it is intensely human."

Two sets of ideas and fashions, Relph argues, have had an especially important impact on urban landscapes in the twentieth century. "As a result," writes Relph, "the modern urban landscape is both rationalized and artificial, which is another way of saying that it is intensely human."

This edition features a new preface in which the author identifies the major visible changes in urban landscapes over the past thirty years, including destination architecture, coffee shops, condominium towers, revitalized downtown streets, and the creation of edge cities. He also considers the less visible yet pervasive impacts associated with the emergence of electronic technologies and sustainable development.

Analyzing Public Policy (Routledge Textbooks in Policy Studies), by Peter John

The fully revised and updated new edition of this textbook continues to provide the most accessible overview of the main approaches in the study of public policy. It seeks to review the most common and widely used frameworks in the study of policy analysis:

  • institutions
  • groups and networks
  • society and the economy
  • individual interests
  • ideas.

The book explains each one, offers constructive criticisms and explores their claims in the light of a variety of American, British and European examples.

Arguing that no one framework offers a comprehensive explanation of public policy; John suggests a synthesis based on different aspects of the approaches, introducing concepts/approaches of advocacy coalitions, punctuated equilibrium and evolution as more effective ways to understand public policy.

Combining both a clear summary of debates in public policy and a new and original approach to the subject, this book remains essential reading for students of public policy and policy analysis.

It seemed a harmless game--until she found out who he really was.

Charity Ames is trapped into a lie and she hates it. She needs a man to pretend to be her husband for a few days—so she hires one. Expecting a gargoyle, she’s amazed when he turns out to be a very appealing hunk.

Ross wants something Charity has, so when he gets the chance to pretend to be her husband, he takes it. But Charity is not the brittle business woman he expects and he falls hard and fast for her barefoot, South Seas image. Trouble is, it’s an image she’s trying to deep six, and she can’t really believe a man from a prominent family like his—and with a terrifying mother like he’s got -- would want anything to do with a girl of her shady past.

When she finds out he’s trying to trick her just like she’s trying to trick her aunt, she’s heartbroken and resentful. Can true love bridge the gap between their backgrounds and set the stage for baby-making happiness?
Includes love scenes.

Silly in premise and execution
By Paper or Kindle
I chose this book because the idea of a temporary husband sounded interesting. Unfortunately, this book turned out to be silly. A stable woman from a flaky family is running a scam on a respectable aunt by pretending to have a husband, just because her wastrel brother claimed she was married. The aunt decides to meet the man and flies across the country, so Charity has to come up with an actual body. Never mind that she was raised by her aunt, yet didn't invite her to the "wedding", put her "husband" on the phone, or send a single photo to the woman, or even change her name. Charity phones a temp agency at random, and it just so happens that a wealthy and successful businessman, who has been trying to get her to join her business to his, answers. Ross, that workaholic, drops any sign of intelligence and decides to pose as the fake husband. Enter a host of unlikely secondary characters, each of whom is worse than the last, from the sister who lacks grounding in reality to a nudist who believes he's a reincarnation of Mozart. They all clutter a book which is short to begin with, and Charity's tolerance for a house full of parasites becomes annoying as well. The only thing Ross and Charity have in common is physical attraction. They certainly do not have good communication. There were too many moments when I wanted to shake one or both of them. Too many characters were unlikable, even despicable. I wound up skimming the heavy breathing scenes, which added nothing to the story. In fact, it appeared that this book's main purpose was to introduce many, many characters whose stories will be told later on in the series. I'm not sure they will be worth reading.

An ok read for the weekend.
By Y. Hatcher
This really seemed like two books pushed together as one. The first half and the second half didn't have the same feel or style at all. It went from funny and cute to weird and choppy. It was ok and I did finish it, but just barely.

Great read!
By Reader
Ross takes on a job as Charity's husband with his own motives- convince her to join his business. But she doesn't want to because her restaurant is her identity. But he gets in too deep and falls in love with her, but he doesn't say the words and their lines cross. Without reassurance from Ross especially since she's pregnant, and his mother's constant reminder that she wasn't good enough, she does the only thing she knows how- she runs. This is another great read from Helen Conrad and I highly recommend it. I'm looking forward to reading the rest of the series

Shadow & Light: Literature and the Life of Faith, 3rd Edition, by Darryl Tippens, Stephen Weathers, Jeanne Murray Walker

The third edition of this classic anthology features updated poetry and essays and drops the drama section, making the new volume both more relevant and more affordable--and a perfect book for readers seeking spiritual enrichment.

Now in its third edition, Shadow & Light continues to stand apart because of what it offers readers: rich, inspiring, and challenging excerpts from great literature, spanning centuries and cultures, all exploring the texture of faith and spirituality. Unlike comparable titles that draw on explicitly Christian works, this important anthology mines spiritual moments in so-called religious and secular texts alike, introducing readers to a broader spectrum of literature and inviting them to expand the capacity of their souls.

A perennial favorite among professors, students, and general readers seeking wisdom and illumination, this revised edition of Shadow & Light features several key changes. Most substantially, the editors have deleted the full-length plays, responding to reader comments that they'd prefer to supplement the text with full-length dramas of their choice. This omission has made the anthology more affordable, allowing readers to spend the balance on outside plays as desired. The editors have further updated the poetry section and expanded the essay section to include timely works on environmental issues.

The third volume continues to include works from Langston Hughes, Flannery O'Connor, Isaac Bashevis Singer, Dietrich Bonhoeffer, Horton Foote, Li-Young Lee, Annie Dillard, Emily Dickinson, and many more.

Good to read with breakfast or morning coffee
By Stuart Dunn
Abbot Tryphon is both a blogger and podcaster at Ancient Faith Radio. He has recently published a book called The Morning Offering. It shares its name with both his blog and podcast. The book is laid out in the format of a daily devotional with a page devoted to each day of the year. The flaw with this book, as with most daily devotionals, is that they forget February 29th. Sure, this is only an issue once every four years, but it can be very annoying when you want a reading and don't have one.

Here is a sample of one of the reflections. January 1 begins by talking about typical resolutions, like losing weight or saving money. Instead of these cliched resolutions, Abbot Tryphon offers us these words of wisdom. "A better plan would be to pledge ourselves to exercise virtue during the coming year. Doing this means disposing ourselves to do good habitually and firmly. We pledge ourselves not only to perform good acts, but also to give the best of ourselves to others. Virtuous people tend toward the good with all their sensory and spiritual powers and also pursue the good, choosing to do it through concrete actions."

This and the many other great reflections in this book are the perfect way to start your day. Each reading takes only five to ten minutes to read, so you can read it over breakfast or a cup of coffee. At times, you cannot tell this book is Eastern Orthodox, but then he makes references to hesychia, Elder Paisos of Mount Athos, and St. John the Wonderworker. This is neither a criticism nor a compliment, merely an observation. Therefore, you could buy this book for your Catholic or Protestant family and friends, and they would find it approachable and understandable as well. Even though the year is almost one-fourth over, it's not too late to draw closer to God. This book is a simple starting point for doing just that.

An Excellent Book of Meditations
By Flowergirl
This was the best devotional book I've read in a long time. Abbot Tryphon’s book of daily meditations covers a full year of his thoughts on scripture, orthodoxy, community and the challenges of developing spirituality in a secular world.

The book offers inspirations and points for examining ones own faith and spirituality. Abbot Tryphon’s scholarship is evident in his avoidance of supermarket religion, while he writes with such a humble style that the believer is encouraged to read and question our own beliefs, examining why we think as we do. He gives us room to grow through the year.

The Morning Offering has a secular value in Abbot Tryphon’s explanation of his church’s beliefs and practices, and why they do as they do. Much of Eastern Europe is Orthodox and to understand much of the political scene in Russia and among her neighbors, it helps to understand the official religion of the country. Abbot Tryphon offers a very readable, non-judgmental explanation of the Russian Orthodox faith.
