Exploring Unequal Achievement in the Schools: The Social Construction of Failure, by George Ansalone

One of the most disturbing problems in American education today is the unequal achievement of children in schools. Few problems have sparked greater concern than the issue of why students from different social origins differ so significantly in their academic performance. This book explores the role played by families and schools in this troubling problem. It employs a social constructionist approach in considering how ascribed characteristics (race, gender, and class) intersect with the daily interactions of teachers and students in classrooms and with the educational practices and structures within schools (tracking, testing, and teacher expectations) to play an exacting role in the construction of success or failure. It suggests that the new student identity that begins to emerge as a result of these processes provides a self-fulfilling prophesy of expectation and belief, which defines how students see themselves as learners and achievers. Through these practices, schooling becomes a crucial factor in the social construction of academic success. The author's final conclusion is inescapable: unequal achievement in school is largely a social construction. But it is a social construction facilitated both by student attributes including gender, race, and class and by the educational structures and policies some schools employ. Because of this undeniable fact, parents, educational practitioners, and policy makers must continue to investigate social policies and practices relative to student abilities and make every effort to understand how they may be related to achievement. Informed by research, they must endeavor to see this power inherent in schooling and the need to effect change.

Review
Recommended. (CHOICE, September 2009)

This work brings new clarity to the problem of underachievement in our schools. Unlike other books in the field, it explores the important issue through the eyes of a social constructionist, enabling us to appreciate more fully the power inherent in schools to impact student achievement. This multidisciplinary work is informative, thought provoking, and, most importantly, well researched. I recommend it to all parents, teachers, school administrators, and students of sociology and education. (Diane B. Scricca, superintendent of schools in Riverhead Central School District, New York)

About the Author
George Ansalone is professor of sociology at St. John's University in New York.

While focusing on the relationship between the papacy and the 14th-century crusades, this study also illuminates other fields of activity in Avignon, such as papal taxation and interaction with Byzantium. Using recent research, Housley covers all areas where crusading occurred--including the eastern Mediterranean, Spain, eastern Europe, and Italy--and analyzes the Curia's approach to related issues such as peacemaking between warring Christian powers, the work of Military Orders, and western attempts to maintain a trade embargo on Mamluk, Egypt. Placing the papal policies of Avignon firmly in context, the author demonstrates that the period witnessed the relentless erosion of papal control over the crusades.

"Should not be missed....The subject is almost unbelievably complicated. It demands and receives a lucid, flexible style which manages to avoid the prosaic and obvious while threading its way through a myriad of detail....[An] excellent book."--Speculum

"Well written and extremely well documented...A work of wider interest than its title would suggest."--The Historian

"This study gives a good and detailed account of different aspects of the late-medieval Church and the world in which it worked."--Theological Studies

Set in a mythical, medieval China where folklore and history are indistinguishable, a dead monk, an ancientand now missingmanuscript, and a ghostly murderer entice the venerable Master Li and his faithful companion Number Ten Ox into the Valley of Sorrows for a deadlyand uproariousconfrontation with the long-dead Laughing Prince. The Second Best Book You've Never Read
By James D. DeWitt
This is Hughart's second book, and the second Master Li and Number Ten Ox adventure. And while this book doesn't have quite the sheer delight of the first, "Bridge of Birds," it is still a wonderful adventure set in the same mythical China. And this novel confirms what you suspected after "Bridge of Birds" - Hughart is no fluke.
Chinese peasant Number Ten Ox, Master Li's client in the first book, is his assistant now, and troubled because it appears ancient Master Li may drop dead before another worthwhile mystery comes along. Ox need not have worried. The Abbot of the monastery in the Valley of Sorrows arrives with a tale of murder, terror and the return of the Laughing Prince, the lunatic despot who ruled the Valley of Sorrows 750 years earlier. How can Master Li resist the temptation? How can we resist?
Once again Master Li and Number Ten Ox must solve a mystery, and once again the mystery is fringed with the supernatural, homicide and genuine, laugh out loud developments. Along the way they meet some truly memorable characters, including Grief of Dawn, a young lady with a deeply mysterious past, and Moon Boy, a sound master and an entirely marvellous creation.
Perhaps the best invention is the characters' mind trip through the Chinese Hell, which makes the efforts of Orpheus and Dante look pretty pitiful in comparison. The ending is less of a stunner than "Bridge of Birds," but this story is a little more mature and tightly crafted than "Bridge."
The only fair criticism of "Stone" is that Hughart only wrote one more book, "Eight Skilled Gentlemen." There have to be Master Li stories not yet told; I wish Mr. Hughart would write them.
A wonderful story, amusing and moving, that exposes the reader to parts of Chinese mythology in the nicest possible way. Exceptionally well written. Highly recommended.

Master Li and Number Tex Ox do it again!
By A Customer
I am Barry Hughart's number one fan.
With that said, I recommend this book without reservation. In fact, any book involving Hughart's alter-ego, Master Li, and Hughart's young hero, Number Ten Ox, would be high on my "must read" list.
I just re-read this tale of a mad prince and his array of fascinating characters and was just as enchanted and entertained as I was the first time I read it in ten years ago.
If you're looking for a wonder-filled story with character that will stay with you long after you turn the final page, read this book!
You can also do yourself a huge favor by purchasing "Bridge of Birds" and "Eight Skilled Gentlemen," the only other Master Li/Number Ten Ox adventures. "Bridge of Birds" was Hughart's first effort and the book introduces the reader to Master Li...the most interesting character is all of fiction.....
After all, how can you NOT love someone who introduces himself by saying:
"My surname isLi and my personal name is Kao, and there is a slight flaw in my character"?
The people at amazon.com are masters at locating the "difficult to find" books on their site. Order this book....and then, read and enjoy!

The History of Childhood (Master Work), by Lloyd deMause

from the Foreword:

Possibly the heartless treatment of children, from the practice of infanticide and abandonment through to the neglect, the rigors of swaddling, the purposeful starving, the beatings, the solitary confinement, and so on, was and is only one aspect of the basic aggressiveness and cruelty of human nature, of the inbred disregard of the rights and feelings of others. Children, being physically unable to resist aggression, were the victims of forces over which they had no control, and they were abused in many imaginable and some almost unimaginable ways by way of expressing conscious or more commonly unconscious motives of their elders...
The present volume abounds in evidence of all kinds, from all periods and peoples. The story is monotonously painful, but it is high time that it should be told and that it should be taken into account...

Brilliant . . . bold . . . challenging . . . heavily documented. (The New York Review Of Books)

Crucial in understanding how the wounded child is archetypal of our time. (John Bradshaw)

Neither history nor psychiatry can ever be the same again. A turning point in the integration of the social sciences. (Reuben Fine, Ph.D.)

Lloyd deMause is probably the first scholar who has made a thorough study of the history of childhood without glossing over the facts. (Alice Miller)

The Newton of the history of childhood
By César Tort
The publication of The History of Childhood in 1974 marks the turning point in the field that deMause created. Putting aside the idealizations of previous historians, the book examines for the first time the history of Western childhood. In the new deMausean paradigm the force of the change is neither technology nor the economy, but the interactions between parents and children.

The initial paragraphs became so famous in psychohistory that they have being quoted extensively:

Quote:

The history of childhood is a nightmare from which we have only recently begun to awaken. The further back in history one goes, the lower the level of child care, and the more likely children are to be killed, abandoned, beaten, terrorized, and sexually abused. It is our task here to see how much of this childhood history can be recaptured from the evidence that remains to us.

That this pattern has not previously been noticed by historians is because serious history has long been considered a record of public not private events. Historians have concentrated so much on the noisy sand-box of history, with its fantastic castles and magnificent battles, that they have generally ignored what is going on in the homes around the playground. And where historians usually look to the sandbox battles of yesterday for the causes of those of today, we instead ask how each generation of parents and children creates those issues which are later acted out in the arena of public life.

/end quote

DeMause has no illusions. Like Thomas Kuhn, he knows perfectly well that paradigm revolutions are achieved gradually while the defenders of the old paradigm die and are replaced by new individuals. "If childhood history and psychohistory mean anything,", writes deMause, "they mean reversing most of the causal arrows used by historians to date." In other words, the way of seeing the world in the humanities and in social sciences is upside down, and psychohistory places our feet back on the ground. The relations between parents and children have determined the social, political and economic aspects in all civilizations of the world. In contrast to the findings of Darwin about the organism and its environment, in Homo sapiens the external world does not mold future developments so definitively as the intergenerational emergency of empathy does.

In a nutshell, the main finding of psychohistory is that academic history fails to recognize the profound role that the love of the parents for their children plays in the future developments of mankind.

History for the Future
By Robert A. Scharf
This revolutionary book impacted not only childhood history but history in general, as well as psychology and the hybrid field of psychohistory. The scholarly contributions remain essential reading for those who wish to look candidly at the past and the introduction by deMause is simply epochal. His view that adult and social violence have their origins in childhood has been vindicated by the most important studies of the subject, including James Gilligan's "Violence," Pulitzer Prize winner Richard Rhodes's "Why They Kill," and Anna Motz's groundbreaking study of female violence "The Psychology of Female Violence," the latter two having drawn on the works of deMause. Accordingly, this book is important not only for understanding our past, but as an indicator of where much fruitful scholarship is going to be done in the future. This work has rightly been praised by such noted historians as William Langer, Past President of the American Historical Association, and Rudolph Binion, as well as many luminaries from the field of psychology including psychiatrist Morton Schatzman, and eminent therapists like Reuben Fine and Alice Miller, who has drawn extensively on deMause's work. I concur with the New York Review of Books that this work is "Brilliant...bold...challenging." I would also add "indispensable." I cannot recommend this work too highly.

Long, dry, but original in its research
By Theo Dee
This is a tough one to read, especially since it is the work of multiple researchers and authors. The writing style changes from chapter to chapter, which can break the flow of the book.

If you take your time, a vivid picture of what childhood was like in the past (at least in Western culture) will slowly unravel. The pattern of improvement becomes evident, always marked by an abrupt change in childrearing practices against the norm of the day. It was these maverick parents that we should thank for the gradual improvement in childhood throughout history.

I can only hope the trend continues for the better. The state of childhood is still in a fairly pathetic state, even in the twenty-first century.

To read more of Lloyd deMause's work, check out his website (psychohistory.com). There is much free literature that is well worth reading. I do not accept all of his conclusions (especially the far-fetched ones), but his views bring a breath of fresh air into the scene of childhood, psychology, and history.

It is the story of Edward Gein, America's most bizarre murderer, grave robber, maker of exotic household items, wearing apparel and possessor of undoubtedly the finest private collection of female heads, vagina, vulvas and unquestionably the most notorious character ever to stand before me in court..."

Bizarre wicked account of a truly diabolica fiend
By buhweep@webtv.net
Ed Gein is perhaps one of the weirdest "psychos" of the 20th century, and his dastardly doings are unparalleled as Robert Gollman does a fairly decent job of bringing Gein's attrocities to light. The book's title America's Most Bizarre Murderer, lives up to it's name as we find Gein dancing in the moonlight with a self exhumed corpse, and the various human-made furniture pieces ie., human skin lamp shade and chair seat, skull bed posts, and bones galore. Gein served as a future role model for film makers Alfred Hitchcock (Psycho), and Tobe Hooper (The Texas Chainsaw Massacre). The book also focuses on the disappearance and murder(butchering) of local hardware store owner Bernice Worden. Ole Ed keeps busy alright! Gollman's writing is a little slow at times, but does the job of bringing the gruesome details we true crime fans crave. Coincidentally, he was also the judge who presided over Gein's case. This is one true crime to have in your collection, especially if you love the unusual, and I do mean UNUSUAL!

OUT OF AMERICA'S HEARTLAND...
By lawyeraau
This is a book about Edward Gein, the mild mannered, Midwestern psychopath from Plainfield, Wisconsin who, in the nineteen fifties, would shock the nation with his gruesome crimes. Edward Gein would become the basis for the best selling book by Robert Bloch, "Psycho", as well as for the Hitchcock film of the same name. Accounts of Edward Gein's heinous crimes would also enter the consciousness of a young Tobe Hooper who, as an adult, would write and direct the classic cult film, "The Texas Chainsaw Massacre".

The author, who was the judge who presided over Edward Gein's trial, writes a cogent, factual account of the last grisly crime perpetrated by of Edward Gein, that of hardware store owner Bernice Worden, who was a widow of fifty-eight at the time of her murder. He also touches upon Edward Gein's other grisly crimes and bizarre practices, all of which shocked the nation at the time of their discovery.

The book contains many police reports and court transcripts. It details Edward Gein's "confession" to the Bernice Worden murder, as well as the author's judicial review of that statement. Ms. Worden's autopsy report is included in the book, as is Edward Gein's personal and medical history, as well as his psychiatric evaluation. It is clear the Edward Gein had an abnormal attachment to his deceased mother. It was an attachment that would manifest itself in unimaginable ways. It is almost hard to believe that such a diminutive, seemingly inoffensive man could be such a madman, but who but a madman would do what he did? Edward Gein, it was discovered, had turned his small farmhouse into a gruesome charnel house, replete with furnishings adorned with human flesh and bones.

The book also includes a chapter on the judicial decision that determined Edward Gein was insane and caused him to be committed to a hospital for the insane for an indeterminate period. Ten years later, Edward Gein was determined to be fit to stand trial for the murder of Bernice Worden, and the author became the presiding judge. One of the most curious aspects of the trial was Gein's request that his assigned counsel be the attorney who had presided over his sanity hearing years earlier. That attorney, however, had since become an assistant district attorney on the case against Gein. Notwithstanding that, he promptly resigned from his position as a state prosecutor and became Edward Gein's defense attorney.

The book contains transcripts from the trial, which makes for somewhat dry reading. There is some hair-raising testimony, however, on what was found at Gein's home, as well as on some of the ghoulish practices in which Gein engaged. The trial, which took nearly a year from start to finish, resulted in Gein's return to the hospital for the insane. The book contains an interview with the forensic psychiatrist at the hospital, as well as the hospital superintendent, in order to include information on Ed Gein's years at the hospital to which he was confined. The book also includes a post trial, hospital interview with Edward Gein himself. Moreover, the book contains an appendix in which the forensic psychiatrist contributes what he labels as "Gein humor", which is typical of "community reactions to a horrifying event.", and he engages in a brief analysis of this phenomenon.

This book is a pretty straightforward, although at times tedious, hodge-podge account by the author, which focuses more on the crime for which Edward Gein stood trial, rather than any in-depth summary analysis of Gein himself or his actions. Aficionados of true crime will find this book of some interest, as it is an insider's account of "the case of the century" and provides a birds-eye view into one of the most horrifying and bizarre crimes ever to be committed.

The book promises "eight pages of blood-curdling police photographs", and this is an absolute understatement. I have never before seen such shocking photographs included in a true crime book. They are the stuff of nightmares and serve to provide the reader with a brief, visual glimpse into the life of Edward Gein, a man with a secret hobby so depraved that it would shock the entire nation when it came to light. Lovers of true crime accounts will find something of interest in this insider's comprehensive foray into a crime committed by a seemingly innocuous man from America's heartland who ended up being so deviant from the norm.

truly frightening
By Patricia R. Andersen
This book is not for the weak of stomach or heart. It is the true account of the man who inspired Alfred Hitchcock's "Psycho"
_and_ Tobe Hooper's "The Texas Chainsaw Massacre". The book is written by the judge of the trial and contains transcripts of the trial.
It is a well written book but it is extremely disturbing to realize this was a real person, a man who was regarded as "the quiet type" before his horrible crimes were discovered.
If you are interested in true, bizarre crimes, this is an excellent book. My advice is to make sure you have some lighter reading before your bedtime or you could very well have nightmares from this book. I know I _did_ and I don't consider myself as one who frightens easily. But the sheer catalog of atrocities, done by a real person on real people is truly disturbing.

The Motivation to Work, by Frederick Herzberg, Bernard Mausner, Barbara B. Snyderman

Quality work that fosters job satisfaction and health enjoys top priority in industry all over the world. This was not always so. Until recently analysis of job attitudes focused primarily on human relations problems within organizations. While American industry was trying to solve the unsolvable problem of avoiding interpersonal dissatisfaction, problems with the potential for solution, such as training and quality production, were ignored. When first published, The Motivation to Work challenged the received wisdom by showing that worker fulfillment came from achievement and growth within the job itself. In his new introduction, Herzberg examines thirty years of motivational research in job-related areas.

Based on workers' accounts of real events that have made them feel good or bad on the job, the findings of Herzberg and his colleagues have stimulated research and controversy that continue to the present day. The authors surprisingly found that while a poor work environment generated discontent, improved conditions seldom brought about improved attitudes. Instead, satisfaction came most often from factors intrinsic to work: achievements, job recognition, and work that was challenging, interesting, and responsible.

The evidence marshaled by this volume called into question many previous assumptions about job satisfaction and worker motivation. Feelings about intrinsic and extrinsic factors could not be validly averaged on a single scale of measurement. Motivation and performance are not merely dependent upon environmental needs and external rewards. Frederick Herzberg and his staff based their motivation?hygiene theory on a variety of human needs and applied it to a strategy of job enrichment that has widely influenced motivation and job design strategies. Motivation to Work is a landmark volume that is of enduring interest to sociologists, psychologists, labor studies specialists, and organization analysts.
